UFC 141 - preview into where the promotions athletes are heading.

What a great way to end UFC's 2011 year.  Full of great moments, no doubt.  UFC 141 gave fans including me a boost of excitement for next year's upcoming 35 planned events.

We saw Johny Hendricks tag Jon Fitch with a quick left hook. Resulting in a KO victory with just 12 seconds into the first round.  Awarding him Knockout Of The Night Bonus.

The Cowboy Cerrone got schooled by the Stockton Kid - Nate Diaz all three rounds. Cerrone managed to place some kicks but unfortunately not damaging enough.  At times he was able to get Diaz off balance and on his back but chose to back off and stand up with Diaz.  Looks like Cerrone has no confidence in his ground game against the BJJ fighter. Nate Diaz since changing weight class has impressed with his boxing and striking accuracy. He still throws in his antics now and then but for the most part he has improved.  They both received Fight Of The Night Bonus.

Lastly the heavyweights made their way to the octagon.  Allistair Overeem who has risen to celebrity status since the merging of the promotions. Brock Lesnar has had a tough road working through his medical dilemmas, recovery from surgery and actually preparing for the fight.  At first it didn't look like Lesnar stood much of a chance against the dutch kick boxer, ultimately that was fact.  Overeem managed to kick and knee his way to victory.  At the end, only one thing was left to be said.

“I’m going to officially say tonight is the last time you’ll see me in the Octagon,” Lesnar said. “Brock Lesnar is officially retired.”

Junior Dos Santos will defend his Heavyweight Championship Belt against Allistair Overeem sometime in 2012.

#UFC139 - Great night! Great Fights!

Tonight's fights were amazing!  Very impressed with each fight on the main card.  But of course, I'm most impressed with Dan Henderson!!

After burning out by the 4th, I'm so thankful Henderson was able to defend himself to the end.  Shogun Rua got a burst in the 4th/5th but was unable to finish off Henderson.  Which was great for my bets tonight.  I was seriously just on my feet, clenching my fists trying to make the time hurry by... felt like the longest match ever.  I guess after the 1st round knockout of the Dos Santos/Valasquez #UFConFOX fight, tonight's 5-round NON-Championship fight was damn right refreshing.
Forget about the main-event, what about Wanderlei Silva's win tonight?  Completely in awe that Wand could look so good once again.  He ate some heavy shots but was able to get comfortable and get the TKO!  Against Cung Le - who him self put on a great show for the UFC fans.  The ease and creativity of his kicks blew me away, if only he connected and KO'd Wand with the Axe kick -- would've been wicked to witness that.  Instead I think we all just witnessed a rejuvenated Wanderlei Silva.  Let's see where this takes us...

Dana White defends #UFConFox, tells critics to "Shut up."

Regarding Steve Cofield's Yahoo! article "UFC on Fox postfight: White tells critics to 'shut up' " , seems as though Dana White had one helluva night.

Dana White was quoted in the article saying:
"For anyone to [expletive] about this fight because they didn't get to see [this fight or] that fight ... shut up!  You should've bought tickets if you wanted to see all the fights," White said. "And you don't like to watch them on Facebook? Seriously, shut up."
"Every weirdo comes from everywhere, [talking] about how bad fighting is and joining the 'Coalition of I Have Nothing Better To Do With My Life.''" said White. "These are the stories we have to tell to mainstream America. Because most of us in this room live in this bubble called MMA. It's a world of triangle chokes and arm bars, all the [expletive] people have never heard of. They don't understand it. They don't know what it is. We have to ease people into this, so that's what we did tonight."
"We have to educate people. We had to show features about these two guys tonight. They're two great athletes. They're two great human beings," White said. "We explained what this sport is and who these people are who are involved in it. They're not what you think they are."
I cannot believe there are so-called UFC fans that were upset about Junior Dos Santos' 1st round knockout win?!  Seriously?  I could understand those that are mad because they lost money on Valesquez, but that's the foundation of gambling for you.  You win some, you lose some.

Valesquez was a slight favorite since the line has been out, up to minutes before the start of the match.  Many people looked at him of being a big guy, who would be able to take Dos Santos down to the ground.  He would've likely done better had he put Dos Santos on his back and served him some Valesquez Ground and Pound. Unfortunately, HE DID NOT DO THAT!  (and even if Cain did get the takedown and was able to punish Junior with a beat down - then again, ref stoppage.. and again not a full 5 round championship fight)

People are so desperate to see a 5round fight on network TV! It COULD'VE happened, this time it didn't.  Maybe next time there's a UFConFOX show, it will.  People are upset because the 'free' championship fight ended in the first round?  How can you be upset when you see a freaking HEAVYWEIGHT just get knocked the fu out?!  You want FREE fights?  Watch the prelims on facebook, on spike, ... heck stream the damn event.

Enough.

It's a sport. Where two competing sides go at it and one comes out victorious (unless of course in a case of a draw - damn judges!).  We can try to predict, we can try to analyze and we can be absolutely sure who we want to win... but you can always count on unpredictability to mess with us.

#UFConFOX - Junior Dos Santos now heavyweight champion!

Turned out to be a good night after all.  I recovered from my parlay thanks to Junior Dos Santos!  What a great performance! During the pre-fight show Brock Lesnar repeated how he would like to see Valasquez  victorious so he could avenge his loss...  then again Lesnar would only fight tonights' winner if he himself defeats Alistair Overeem in December.

So now we wait...  will it be Dos Santos vs. Lesnar?  Or will it be Dos Santos vs. Overeem?  I'm not sure which one I'd prefer to watch.  I do know that the Lesnar vs. Overeem fight is going to be entertaining (at least to me) - It's like watching Bulldozer vs. Bulldozer. LMAO!  Hope you all enjoyed tonights fights!

Parlay for UFC 137 - Nick Diaz vs BJ Penn & Dennis Siver vs Donald Cerrone

So after a horrible week I was unable to make a video blog for this UFC 137.  Sorry sorry, but here is my parlay ticket.

I took Nick Diaz mainly because Diaz's style is far more aggressive than that of Penn's.  I would think that the only way for BJ Penn to win (if he can pull it off)  would be to try to get the fight to the ground.   With both being talented BJJ fighters , I would like Penn to take Diaz's back and pull off a choke.  Diaz, who's never been submitted before - has normally finished his fights in the first or second round.  That being said - it makes it hard for me to believe that Penn will come out victorious.

Nick Diaz - KO/TKO

I took  Dennis Siver mainly because since my bet was a parlay the only other underdog I liked was him.  Although Donald Cerrone is far from boring and is coming into this bout with a 5-win streak (which cancels out Siver's 4-win streak ; in my opinion) being that he's coming from Greg Jackson's camp, it's almost a certainty that his gameplan is solid.  Siver will really look to be on the offensive here as to prevent Cerrone from picking him apart from outside.  Siver needs to have his takedown defence on high alert and prevent any kind of submission attempts.

Dennis Siver - DEC

Rampage vs Jones & Gomi vs Diaz UFC135 Thoughts

So I was asked who I'd be taking for the upcoming Rampage vs Jones matchup.

Jon Jones, who is a huge favourite to win has no doubt shown me he is capable of coming into a fight aggressively and can execute a gameplan to win.  He's young, still trying to prove to the masses that he's the real deal  (even with all his wins!) .  UFC is throwing him not just down and out opponents, but tough, fan favourite fighters that should be giving him a test of his skill.  Instead - it seems, that Jones is above them with a skillset that appears almost naturally without thought.

Rampage Jackson, a veteran with a fan base of a celebrity.  His days in Pride still providing him with much needed attention to his toughness.  He rose to the top, stumbled down, and is now trekking back up.  But will Jones stop him in his tracks? As of current, I can't help but think that Rampage isn't as near to his best as he once was.  He came back to snag a win over Lyoto Machida, then a year later take another win off Matt Hamill.  Does that show that he has the capability of taking Jones down?

- Honestly, I like Rampage.  I think if he could just come into this fight as viscous and threatening of a fighter as he was once portrayed, he may be able to pull it off?  With that being said, Rampage being a huge underdog at +375 ... how can I not take that bet?  Rampage needs to engineer the perfect strategy, then needs to implement it without fault.

As the underdog, I'm okay losing a $50 to a Jones-Win (just so long as it's not a split decision) ... but if Rampage could pull off (what oddsmakers believe to be impossible) a convincing win then I'll be good with my $187.50!

As you can obviously see, I also took Takanori Gomi .  For me, this is an obvious underdog bet I cannot refuse.  It has absolutely nothing to do with me having it out for Nate Diaz, but truthfully ... I really don't care for Diaz as an mma fighter.

nate diaz,  MR. STOCKTON. Is more of a brawler than he is a strategic fighter.  That's where I think he goes wrong.  I don't think he works out a winning gameplan.  Instead I believe his mentality is to just go with the flow.  I was at UFC129 where I watched him get tossed like a rag doll by Rory MacDonald. Fucking Amazing!  Should have been part of the live PPV, but i guess Spike was good enough.

I've digressed.  Getting back to why I think Gomi will take this.  Although Diaz has bjj - I still think that Gomi will be able to get the takedowns and be a dominating wrestler.  Keep his composure and avoid Diaz's submission attempts.  Standup, Gomi has the knockout power. His cardio could probably do some work but overall Gomi has a good chance here.  Besides, Diaz has once again changed weight classes...

Floyd Mayweather Jr. to challenge Victor Ortiz

Saturday night is going to be full of aggression!  On one hand it's the dying sport BOXING!! On the other, is the ever so popular UFC!!

While I can't wait to watch both, I'll be focusing my attention on boxing ( and PVRing UFC fight night).
Mayweather Jr. - who has been on hiatus for over a year - will be challenging Ortiz.  Obviously Ortiz is a huge underdog but what I can't believe is this bet I placed:

I highly doubt this fight will make it past the 9th round.  There's so much each fighter has to prove.  Mayweather Jr. can't afford to lose considering he's supposed to be the toughest contender to not face Pacquiao.  Ortiz nothing to lose and everything to gain if he wins.  Can't leave it to the judges - we all know judges can be bought biased.

I see it being the first 3 rounds as the most aggressive.  round 4-5-6 we'll see who's got the stamina to keep on and the power to hurt.  rounds 7-8-9 , someone'll be hurt enough where it'll hinder his performance.  There may not be a KO, but i can see a possible technical knockout?  I just don't see how this fight will make it to the final round.  If that would be the case, then shouldn't their odds be better than Ortiz at +550 and Mayweather Jr. at -800?  I don't know,  maybe I'm wrong to think that .. I rarely bet boxing - let alone watch it, but either way, UNDER 11 1/2 Rounds for +150 with two knockout powerhouse boxers in the ring sounds good to me.

NFL Begins!

Can I just say that I am extremely ecstatic that NFL didn't end up in a lockout this season.  To top it off, the season opener : New Orleans vs. Green Bay, was absolutely incredible to watch.

Except for the fact that I lost my first 3 bets!
My NFL bankroll for this season is off to a bad start...  Guess I'll have to do some parlays and try to pull off some big wins this sunday.

And its not like my bets weren't able to win... damn the Packers for getting that final touchdown in the first half! And the Saints offence for running that final play through the middle.

Anyone got suggestions for Sunday?!

Tito Ortiz to replace Phil Davis for main event brawl against Rashad Evans!

UPDATE:  SUNDAY AUG 7 2011

LOL! Okay, obviously asking for a "2nd round beat down , ref stoppage" was not asking for too much... but geez, wrong guy!  With Tito Ortiz being a big underdog at +300, I didn't mind him getting out-struck by Rashad Evans.  Evans put on an amazing performance.  Excellent stand up and clearly and exceptional ground game.  Beating Ortiz at his own trademark ... GROUND AND POUND!  It felt like I was watching the kid that got bullied growing up turn the tables on the bully.  With the risk of sounding like Rogan: "Phenomenal performance by Rashad!"
..........

Recently heard the news that Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis will not be fighting on the upcoming UFC 133 card.  Even with the disappointing news, I was excited to learn that Tito "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Ortiz will be replacing him.  I wonder if Rashad Evans is stunned by the news? The fight is in a few weeks, will it be enough time for him to train for Ortiz?   Ortiz just gained an amazing victory over Ryan Bader and I'm quite sure that really has him pumped up for this match-up.  Will this be enough momentum for Ortiz to secure another win?  Will Evans need to change his game plan?

After seeing Ortiz's win over Bader, it's tough for me not to choose an old favourite of mine.  Yes, I did lose hope throughout the years.  I never imagined that Ortiz would even be back to his old ruthless ways of some dangerous ground and pound. Forget that he submitted Bader, I'm impressed he just bounced back. He took a draw against Evans the first time around but that was years ago.  Fight after fight, I've been so let down by him before... but perhaps he just didn't care much about fighting then? He had other stuff going on in his life?  No... no need to give excuses to the losses he's had.  However, with that being said I bicker with myself as to "why oh why" am I to bet on him again?

But when Tito Ortiz fights on Aug 6, I'll be rooting for him.... how can I live with myself if I choose Evans over Ortiz now when he's already made me and my wallet happy by beating Bader?  I'd like a 2nd round beat down, ref stoppage .. would that be asking for too much?

COMMENTS: Who you taking? Rashad Evans or Tito Ortiz?!

Roy Williams Lame Proposal - REJECTED

Seriously could not believe my eyes when I read the story on Roy Williams rejected marriage proposal.  Apparently back in February 2011, Williams decided that he would mail the $76,000 ring to former beauty pageant winner Brooke Daniels.  Which landed him a straight up Hell  NO!

So wait, he decided to film his proposal and mail it along with the ring to her?  And he expected a Yes?!  How dumb is this guy?  To top it all off, he files a lawsuit to get the ring back from her!

She ends up giving it back.  Who would want to to say Yes to such a lame proposal?  Besides, NFL is still in a lockout, so possibly no season for Williams this upcoming year.  He could really use that $76, 000.

TUF 13 Finale: Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis

Clay Guida is infamous for his long locks and constant head bopping around the octagon.
Anthony Pettis is known for his off-the-cage head cage against Ben Henderson.
They'll go head-to-head Saturday night June 4, 2011.  Headlining as main event for the TUF13 finale.
Clay Guida & Anthony Pettis @ weighins - june 3 2011
Anthony Pettis takes on this challenge as he waits to unify the WEC lightweight championship with the winner of the Edgar vs Maynard III - still to be announced.  It would be in his best interest to win convincingly against Guida (who was a former lightweight champion in his Strikeforce days) otherwise the future fight with whoever will be the UFC champ will seem ... for lack of a better word  - dumb.  If he can't get past Guida, does he really have what it takes to be a top contender in the division?  Would he really be worthy of a title fight?  Yes, I know he's the WEC champ but has he got what it takes to be a UFC champ?

Clay Guida as far as I know, has yet to be promised any considerations for an upcoming title fight.  Will him winning this match secure him a spot as a top contender in the lightweight division? Guida has improved in all aspects of his game considerably since teaming up with Jackson's training camp.  Standup, his striking is violent and relentless.  His ground game is strong, controlled and submission ready.

I see this fight being a gruesome battle.  All limbs available will be In-Use.  Not one second of cautiousness as each fighter steps into the pocket to land their heavy blows. Pettis with his fancy leg work. Guida with his powerful takedowns.  One things certain.  Blood will be shed.

UFC: 137: GSP vs NICK DIAZ

Wednesday was a great day for UFC fans. It is official.  GSP will put his welterweight belt on the line against Strikeforce's welterweight champ Nick Diaz.  Taking place at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for UFC 137!  This is going to interesting to say the least.

twitter.com/danawhite
Georges St-Pierre comes into this challenge undefeated since 2007.  SO DOES DIAZ.

Surprisingly I think GSP has a pretty good idea of who Nick Diaz is and how he fights.
"I don't know him as a person but he's a very exciting guy to watch," said St-Pierre. "I'm happy to fight him. He's going to bring the best out of me, because he's always putting on a good fight, going forward. It's going to be a good fight for me."
GSP, who just defeated Diaz's training partner Jake Shields, will have to come up with a foolproof strategy to get him through this one. Diaz's overall skill and fighting personality will be tough to control.  GSP would need to find a way to control Diaz's ring aggression.

The heart in Diaz is strong, so don't count him out.  I'd like for GSP to stop fighting so technical. I want him to fight from 'within', to be one with the octagon.  Sometimes it seems there's too much thinking.  Just fight GSP! Show us that this fight could live up to its expectations.  Please don't disappoint me again.  Thanks.

NHL: Stanley Cup Finals: Vancouver Canucks vs. Boston Bruins

Game 1 ended in hometown victory as the Vancouver Canucks squeeze in the winning first goal of the night with only 19seconds left.

Will the Bruins be able to tie the serious next game? Or will the Canucks be the first canadian team in over a decade to bring back the Stanley Cup to Canadian soil?

Tampa Bay and Boston will battle it out on the ice tonight in Game 7.  Winner here will see the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Stanley Cup Finals.

Dallas Mavericks Silence OKC Thunder

Watched the NBA West Conference Game 4. With OKC winning 10+ baskets I figured this one was done. I thought it was a comfortable enough lead. Thank goodness I PVR-ed the game, otherwise I would've missed out on the Mavericks comeback.

The Frankie Edgar Gray Maynard Trilogy Postponed

Due to injuries to both fighters, we'll have to wait another 6-8 weeks to see this fight happen. Read more about Edgar and Maynard's situation here.

So instead, UFC130 will now be headlined by Rampage Jackson and Matt Hamill. I guess I'm okay with this considering what Rampage said in a recent interview about wanting to do movies more than actually fighting in the UFC.  Is that a little bit of an insight as to how serious he's taking his training?

Thiago Alves and Rick Story bout will now be moved up to the main PPV card.  I remember Rick Story's submission against Brian Foster as though it was yesterday.  Perhaps its because Foster's full name is an exact of my friend's husbands name.  Either way Rick Story has been on a winning streak, but I would say Thiago has had the tougher opponents.

Either way, with the sudden drop of the main event and with Rampage, Matt, Thiago and Rick stepping up UFC 130 still has the opportunity to be worth the ppv purchase.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Shane Mosley; Thoughts?

On Saturday, May 7 2011, Manny Pacquiao will step into the ring across Shane Mosley.  The excitement is pumping into Las Vegas as many await to see if Mosley will be able to triumph over Pacquiao. Many Pacman supporters praise the boxer as being the greatest fighter to step into the ring since Mohammed Ali. While others are showing a hint of worry.

Is it possible?  Could Shane Mosley be the first man to upset the current WBO Welterweight Champion?  Since September 2006, Manny Pacquiao has been consistently in the ring no more than six months between each fight.  Tasting sweet victory 13 consecutive times.  However, in his last two fights Pacquiao failed to get a finish, instead giving the matches to the judges.  Could it be that he's reached his peak?  Will he have enough in him to give an aggressive fight against Mosley -who's been out of the ring for a year in recovery and training mode since his loss to Mayweather, Jr.?

I believe that accuracy in their strikes and counters will be key.  Both fighters have had their share of success, but with these two anything is possible.  I doubt this fight will go the distance.  I just see no way either fighter will want to take that kind of punishment from each other for 12 rounds.  You have Pacquiao with a heavy plate; to win not only for himself or his fans, but for his country.  You got Mosley as the underdog, who has the chance to pull off one of the biggest upsets in boxing history.

No big deal.

Either way, this fight should prove to be exciting... each and every round.  I don't see either man holding back.

Karate Kid: Lyoto Machida @ UFC 129

After losing to Shogun & Rampage, Lyoto Machida was able to knock out veteran Randy Couture in Hollywood fashion.  It was unreal to think the Crane kick could be used in unstaged combat.. but it was perfectly executed.  Couture is now in retirement and as for Machida... They hype around him is surging through the MMA world.  Legendary.

Chael Sonnen calls out 'Spitsping'

I can't believe what Michael Bisping did to Jorge Rivera at UFC 127. What a disgraceful performance. First Bisping knees him in the face while Rivera down on both knees. Then at the end he goes to Rivera's corner, spits on him and tells him 'Apologize'! What a display of bad sportsmanship. Down right disrespectful to the art of combat. He calls himself a mixed martial artist.. what a sore loser.
I know Chael Sonnen is going through some personal stuff, plus being found of drug use for his fight agaisnt Anderson Silva but if Joe Silva decides to put this matchup on... it'll be insane!!

Anderson Silva retains his title with an incredible knockout finish. Remains the undisputed Middleweight UFC Champion. Will the Phenom squish the Spider at UFC 126?

In the Main Event we have Anderson Silva defending his Middleweight Title against Vitor Belfort. Both veteran fighters, each very successful in their own right. This looks to be the making of a savage striking battle.

Will Rich make it through The Forrest?

When I first hear of this match-up, I jumped for joy! Over the years, I've come to become a huge fan of both. I went to my first UFC event in Las Vegas. Saw Griffin take the Light Heavyweight Championship from Rampage Jackson. I was also at the event in British Columbia when Franklin knocked out Chuck Liddell. So I'll be happy with whomever wins.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHTS: Ryan Bader vs Jon Jones

We have the battle of the "undefeated light heavyweights"…. kinda. Technically defeated Jon 'Bones' Jones (11-1), will be going up against undefeated Ryan Bader (12-0). Predicted by many, this fight has the potential to be the Knock Out/Fight of the Night.

Bantamweight's Torres & Banuelos debut at UFC126

Representing the Bantamweight class will be Miguel Torres and Antonio Banuelos. A decade into their pro career, these two will now be fighting on the UFC stage for the first time - PRESSURE.

RECAP: FIGHT FOR THE TROOPS 2

UFC put on their 2nd Fight For The Troops event in Fort Hood, Texas. Great event showcasing several standout fighters.

First up, we saw Matt Wiman take a unanimous victory over Cole Miller. Wiman taking control early, catching Miller with quick combinations. On the ground, Wiman showed exceptional ground-and-pound by throwing hammerfists and elbows from the top position. Miller unable to keep the fight standing, ate Wiman's fists all night long. An dominating performance by Winman.

Pat Barry attacked Joey Beltran's left leg throughout their fight. Putting on display his damaging kicks. Beltran kept Barry pinned to the cage as much as he could while trying desperately to take Barry down. In the 3rd

Fight for the Troops 2 will be tomorrow night! I'm excited to see how main event: Dunham/Guillard will turn out. I would love to see a fierce striking battle between these two. Maybe some blood... ???

UFC: FIGHT FOR THE TROOPS

MAIN EVENT:
Evan DUNHAM vs Melvin GUILLARD

At first announcement I was quite excited to see the Fight for the Troops event.  When the main bout was K-FLO taking on DUNHAM.  Unfortunately for me, Florian is out with an injury… BOO!!  Guillard stepping in for Florian, I guess will have to do.  Here's my thoughts on this match up...

Gillette & Golf Digest Ditch Tiger Woods

First Elin divorce's him (after almost 6 years)… Now,  both Gillette and Golf Digest chuck him to the curb. Tiger just can't catch a break.

His contract with Gillete expired at the end of 2010, they opted NOT to renew his contract.  As for Golf Digest, they ended it, mutually. Apparently Tiger doesn't want to commit himself to the extra time needed to produce articles for the magazine…

Is it just me of does it kinda looks like Tiger has commitment issues?
Hopefully he can come back from this horrible 2010 year he's been having.
Some time off (maybe therapy?) might help him get his swagger back.

Poor Tiger, had it all and it came crashing down. Guess the grass isn't green anymore is it?

CHAEL SONNEN Pleads Guilty..

This evening I came across an article on Chael Sonnen at Yahoo! Sports online.  Chael Sonnen plead guilty to money laundering related to mortgage fraud.  He'll be sentenced on March 28, 2011. You can read the press release on the case at United States Attorney's Office: District of Oregon Press Room.
