Dos Santos outdoes Mark Hunt at #UFC160

Round 1 showed me that Mark Hunt loves the left hook … but JDS is more accurate with his - he connects a heavy one but not enough power for a KO. Hunt has one helluva noggin on him and recovers quickly. Both men taking advantage of their strengths - their standup skills. JDS with his swift, hard-hitting combinations. Hunt not afraid to be square in the line of fire, even stalking JDS trying to control the fight. Hunt occasionally mixes in some low kicks but none that seem to do much damage.

By the 2nd round, Hunt is breathing through his mouth, his lack of conditioning getting the better of him. JDS easily takes notice and begins to use Hunt as a punching bag. Hunt can't seem catch a break. But why should he catch a break? He's not protecting his chin - keeping his hands down for JDS to have a clear view of his target. Swinging wildly at air, JDS seizes this opportunity to take Hunt down. JDS able to pass guard and tries for a crucifix mount. Hunt gets saved by the bell and gets to the 3rd round with JDS (which only 2 others from his 16 victories have done - Shane Carwin and Roy Nelson).

Clearly struggling to catch his breath in the 3rd, JDS appears to be composed and clear headed. Hunt has yet to do any significant damage to JDS, finding it difficult to connect with his moving target. What's insane is the amount of punishment that Hunt is taking to his face and yet he's still on his feet! The clock is running down the last minute and JDS gives no mercy. Amazingly he throws a spinning back kick to the head of Hunt and knocks him down. A final right hand driven through Hunt's face resulting in one heck of a knockout!!

Unfortunately, Hunt's lack of speed is (what I think) holding him back. He really didn't do much in this fight except dodge his way to his inevitable knockout. He had no hope in surpassing JDS in the race for a title shot. He reminds me of Roy Nelson slightly - Hunt could use some polishing up. You can't win titles on defence if there's absolutely no offence. Am I right? - I think so.
